Meet our Tutors:

Paddi Clark
Is an extremely qualified sugarcraft and cake decoration specialist with over 20 years experience. She has gained distinction in City & Guilds ABC and NCFE national qualifications, and taught the subject at many FE colleges. She is a medal winner in various sugarcraft competitions. A competition judge, external verifier/moderator and has featured on the TV programme ‘Icing on the Cake’. Paddi has demonstrated and taught the subject overseas.....in the USA, Europe, Scandinavia, Channel Islands and New Zealand as well as many towns and cities in the UK. She is a founder member of the ‘Taste of Art’ group who have exhibited Sugar as an art form in art galleries in Surrey and Bowes Museum County Durham. She is a author of 2 books – ‘Sugar Flowers for Beginners’ and ‘More Sugar Flowers for Beginners’ and regularly writes articles for established Sugarcraft magazines. She is a member of The British Sugarcraft Guild.

Ulla Netzband
Is a qualified tutor having passed City and Guild and Awarding Body Consortium in cake decoration and wired sugar-flowers in 1987 with distinction in all disciplines. She has co-written 2 books and regularly features in Cake Craft & Decoration magazine, has won many awards at national and international level and teaches here and abroad. Ulla’s passion is sugar and cold porcelain flowers which are taught to a very high standard.

Carol Haycox
Boasts over twenty years experience in sugarcraft industry, including passing City and Guilds 121 in Royal icing and confectionary. She now teaches and demonstrates all types of sugarcraft internationally. Is experienced in running her specialist sugarcraft shop for a period twelve years and has been teaching classes across all levels, from beginners to experienced in all aspects of cake decoration and sugar flowers for the past fifteen years. More recently has written articles for magazines.

Baking the Perfect Sponge with Carol Haycox
Saturday 10th May 2014 10.00 am to 3.00 pm

This one day course will show you how to bake the perfect sponge even when altering quantities and adding flavouring as well as baking and decorating cupcakes.

You will learn:
• The difference between baking a single cake and multiple cakes in your oven
• Ensure your cake is cooked evenly
• Oven temperatures
• Use of equipment
• Lining tins verse non stick sprays
• How to alter and adapt recipes add flavours and colouring
• Advice on colouring for rainbow cakes
• Bake a moist firm sponge
• Alter quantities to keep the sponge perfect no matter what size, shape or flavour.

Beginners Photography Workshop with Tina Sheikh
Sunday 25th May 2014 11.00 am to 1.00 pm

This is a one day course for crafters and online sellers who would like to take professional-looking photos of their creations in under ten minutes. There will be approximately one hour of theory and one hour of practical work where you will take photos of your product using your usual camera such as your smartphone or digital camera.

You will learn:
• How to take professional-looking photos by working with the camera, software and tools you already have at home (free and low cost solutions discussed)
• How light affects photos and how to create the ideal lighting conditions at home (free and low cost solutions discussed)
• How photos should be framed considering the ideal position and angle for the product you are photographing
• Industry standards for backgrounds relating to the products you are interested in photographing and how to achieve them (free and low cost solutions discussed)
• How to work with your camera of choice e.g. a smartphone, compact camera or SLR digital camera. The differences in camera qualities and one-to-one advice on the ideal settings for the camera you are using
• Understanding how to use software and programs on your laptop/computer to edit photos in seconds and why this is important (free and low cost solutions discussed)

This course is suitable for:
• Beginners and those who are not confident with photography or those who would like a general understanding of free/low cost solutions for DIY photography.

It is mandatory that you bring the camera that you regularly use to take photos (smartphones are acceptable).
It is encouraged that you bring products that you photograph regularly (or would like to) so we can provide more personalised advice. If available, please bring with you:
- camera manuals
- wires for connecting your camera to laptop/computer
- laptop where you normally store your photos

NB: Due to the restriction in space, please ensure cakes are no more than 2 tiers. Other craft products such as jewellery, paper crafts, fabric crafts, pottery, wood and glass crafts welcome provided they are under 12” tall and 20” wide.
